Building Back in Les Cayes: A Story of Resilience

Amid escalating violence in Port-au-Prince, we expanded to Les Cayes, welcoming 50 new first-year students into a safer, more stable environment. In partnership with the American University of the Caribbean (AUC), students have integrated seamlessly—engaging in their studies, collaborating with peers, and accessing essential resources like libraries, labs, and health services.

Far from the capital’s instability, Les Cayes offers space for students to learn and grow. Since the fall, HELP scholars have built strong academic and social connections with AUC students. As first-year agronomy student Djouna Paphinis shares, campus life is inspiring—each day brings new learning through collaboration.

Beyond the classroom, students are already leading through educational support for local children, environmental initiatives, and campus service. The Les Cayes campus is both a necessary adaptation and a forward-looking investment in sustaining HELP’s community, leadership development, and scholarship opportunities.
